Something about it really just draws me in. IF you are looking for a new game to try out let em try to convince you that this one is worth your time. This game although not technically being called a fire emblem game is the product of Shouzou Kaga, the creator of the fire emblem franchise.
He made this game a after he left Intelligent Systems, and it was released in Japan in 2001 for the Playstation. With that out of the way lets talk about theImportant parts of the game.STORY & CHARACTERSThe basic story of this game will be no surprise to anyone who has played at least a couple fire emblem games, a young man tries to take back his kingdom from an evil empire and cult who are trying to resurrect an ancient evil dragon. Standard stuff.

What makes this different, maybe a bit less so with Echoes on the horizon, was the fact that the story was split between two groups each fighting for something different, yet achieving the same goal. Runan, the first lord you play as, is fighting to reunite a shattered country controlled by the aforementioned evil empire. Runan is nothing new in terms of motivation for anyone who has taken a sideways glance at a fire emblem title, there are little things that set him apart from other lords like his romance plot, but nothing to divergent from the norm. Something interesting to note about his character however is that The other army you take control over is run by Holmes. Holmes is different. He is not the stereotypical lord.
Holmes is an asshole, also one of my favorite lords. He is prince and gets a legendary sword but that’s about where all similarities end. Holmes runs a privateering crew of misfits and is the best friend to Runan. Holmes’s Story is something a bit different, he doesn't really care that much about the war, instead he yearns for adventure and is an avid treasure hunter. His story, once it gets off the ground, is about him and girl named Katri and their struggles together about learning who Katri is and why it is that she is important to the cult. The main story is so much more than the quick synopsis though. About halfway into the game what feels like almost every battle is drenched in moral grayness.
Enemy generals are questioning why they're doing what they're doing and Runan begins to question whether what he is doing is right. It just feels so different and more complex than most of the fire emblem games i have played. All that is the main story, but that is only a portion of what makes the game compelling as a narrative. What really drew me in were the side stories between the large cast of characters. This can be seen a pseudo support system with these conversations usually giving bonuses in combat when the involved characters are close to each other on the map. These are compelling and give a lot of character to most of the cast. Personal favorites of mine are Vega’s interactions with the other Myrms, and Zeig and Kate’s relationship.
I’m not going to spoil any of them, and there are A LOT of them, because I believe that you should play through the game and experience it for yourself. On a side note, this game exposed me to my new favorite fire emblem gal. San.GRAPHICS & SOUNDTRACKMore of a side thing than anything else the graphics in this game are alright, it sure looks like a Playstation game, but combat animations are pretty cool looking. With regards to the soundtrack nothing really caught my ear, but I'm not a professional musician and i don't know much about that stuff.GAMEPLAYIm going to start this section off with the two worst things about the game. 1) Positioning units before a battle is nonexistent and its all just trial and error and is a hassle. 2) putting the wait command first above the use staff command lead to a couple of rests when i was getting used to the game.
Everything else from here on out is mostly good stuff. This games has some great Gameplay, so what you want about Kaga but he know how to make a good map. And for the most part the maps in this game are really good with multiple ways through most of them and side objectives to keep the game feeling fresh. There are a couple of stinkers near the beginning and the end but they aren't nearly bad enough to ruin the game. The enemies feel hard enough to give a challenge to most units and there are a lot of tense moments in some maps. The game, overall is at a decent difficulty and has enjoyable gameplay the whole way through.Runnan’s chapters Play out like an old school fire emblem game, moving from one chapter to the next with no Gaiden chapters. Holmes’s Layout is more like Sacred Stones, A world map that just gets bigger the more you play, plenty of shops to buy things from, and areas filled with monsters to grind up on, although grinding is not needed at all in this game.As for units each one feels different even if they are in the same class. Growth rates in this game are low a 35% being a pretty good so even a little change in growth rates can mean a lot to a character.
The big differences are Personal weapons and staffs, usually to differentiate between the numerous healers and sword users, and skills. These make each character feel unique and they each feel like they have a their own niche.CONCLUSIONOverall this is truly a hidden gem of a fire emblem game, which is already sort of a hidden gem of a franchise (or at least it was when this game came out) and I firmly believe that it is worth your time. If you have any questions i will be glad to answer them and let me know if I left something out.Heres a link to the Translation patch that I used:big thanks to the person that did it, I don't know you but I really appreciate your work. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I think TRS is incredible overrated (around here, at least).I'm not going to complain about the gameplay. That part of the game is pretty good.My grip lies with the story, and not necessarily because it's standard stuff, but because it is presented in terrible big walls of exposition. The fact the story is pretty cliche makes it worse, though. No, really, I almost snoozed at one point.
Even the epilogue has a particularly big one, for some reason (what the hell game). I dreaded every time Runan and Holmes reunited, because it meant they were going to dump more lines of dry, raw exposition, instead of, I dunno, trying to focus on their friendship and make the characters more alive, all while dropping some hints about world building and the plot. That's, tops, my biggest grip with this game, and it really spoiled the experience for me, since for most SRPG, story/cast is 2/3 of the game, imo. I was dragging myself through the battles because I heard such good things about it, too.The romance subplot made me cringe everytime it reared its head, but I was never a romance person, so it's hard for me to enjoy those. It's probably me.Now, the cast.
For some reason, I felt most of the characters were missing something. They felt dry and not really human, with some exceptions.I can't place my finger on exactly why but there aren't a lot of characters I actively liked in TRS.Perhaps it's because of the translation that a bunch of the dialogue came out tasteless?IF there's something story related I enjoyed, it was (as the OP mentioned) the 'side stories'. I found the idea pretty neat, and the dialogue there felt more alive.
Maybe because there weren't big dumps of exposition!:VSorry, just felt like letting it out of my chest. Maybe I just went with really big expectations, and the real thing just wasn't what I hoped.I think, if you value plot/cast, it's not the best game to play. If you don't care about it, though, go for it. As a guy who actually liked the Tear Ring Saga, I agree that Tear Ring Saga has some flaws. I didn't love it like I did with Path of Radiance and Genealogy of the Holy War, but I did like what it tried to do.The story suffers a lot. It also shows the consequence of having a influential developer on the wheel without a second-man to keep him in check.
Most of the characters resembles characters from Kaga's previous work, which just screams 'is this a bootleg Fire Emblem?' However, with the exception of some Support conversations and the entire Tellius Saga, most of Fire Emblem's story-telling doesn't put too much effort on plot unlike some other RPG's. Even then, some cast members have a lot of depth while most of them immediately gets forgotten in an instant (poor Harken, I knew thee well).I honestly think Kaga would've done better if he just waited until today, when influential developer veterans trying to make a indie games is becoming a huge trend. Would he have succeeded if he waited until now? I can't say how things would go. But I can definitely see that people would've been more interested if that Nintendo shenanigans didn't happen.Sadly, all there is left is Vestaria Saga. The game's fun, but it's nearly damn impossible to beat for newcomers. If plot/cast is valued, I'd say something like Trails in the Sky or Atelier series is better to play then Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem does have an enjoyable cast. They're definitely not annoying, to say the least. It is presented in terrible big walls of expositionNo, really, I almost snoozed at one point.THIS.Holy motherfucking crap, you hit the nail right on the head. The game literally starts off with a gigantic wall of text which does nothing to make it easier for the player to relate to what's being described.Contrast that to FE4. That game does start with a long timeline of events, but you really don't need to read it in its entirety to get enough background information about Jugdral. What I want to point attention to is the introductory sequence which introduces and shows the countries on a map of Jugdral, along with a catch up of recent events (namely, Kurth's campaign in Isaach). Not to mention, sometimes the dry exposition between characters is absolutely torturous in length.
There was a part of the game where some old guy travelling with Holmes would periodically stop my progress on returning to a part of the map by holding me at a map point and giving more and more nonsensical exposition. I even literally said out loud 'Oh my god, shut the fuck up.'
Also, the abundance of characters makes it extremely hard to follow what's going on too.

Patch release v0.8- First public releaseCheck the following link to download the patch, or click on this announcement and find the file attached. http://www.ayashii.com/blog/ayashii-gamesubs.html IMPORTANT NOTE: USE THIS PATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is a reason this patch is v0.8. This patch has not been beta-tested, nor has the editing process fully been completed. We could wait another, I dunno, another 2 years for enough editors to polish the translation in the spare time, but by then it will be 2014 and anyone who has been waiting on this project has waited long enough. PLEASE NOTE: the later half of the game was translated with many hours of good effort by somebody who is fluent ... Posted Jul 21, 2012, 7:58 PM by Fox Star74
One year later, lots achieved but still need editors :)So just thought I'd post a quick update as it has been more than a year. We've gotten lots of files edited over the past year thanks to many of our hardworking volunteer editors! However, there's still quite a few of Runan's translations that we need to finish editing, so if any editors who know Japanese can help edit Runan's translations, that would be AWESOME! Here's to hoping we can get this thing finally fully edited soon enough. Posted Apr 24, 2012, 12:17 AM by Fox Star74
Desperately in need of editorsWe are currently in need of dedicated and passionate editors who are familiar with Fire Emblem lingo, and hopefully can understand Japanese to read over and check the translations. Already several people have expressed interest but more help is always appreciated, as everybody gets busy from time to time. Please email me at foxstar74 [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks for your time! First pass translation complete!Breaking news update: Runan has just finished the first pass translation of Tear Ring Saga!!! Thanks to everybody involved for such a tremendous job well-done! We are now entering the editing phase, two editors have expressed interest (VincentASM and kutsurogu), so hopefully we will get the ball rolling on this soon enough. As I declared in a previous post, I believe Tear Ring Saga translation project is no longer a question of if, but when. :)Look forward to future announcements as the project takes steps closer towards completion. As monumental as this step may be, there are still many more steps that need to be taken (editing, beta testing, patch making). The release date for the patch can not ... Hacking and project start: alamone Old translation (files that have not been uploaded yet to this page): Firelizard New Translation (continued off from where Firelizard left off): Eien ni Hen, akage, sumi, Oboro, Runan Additional Hacking: LKhoa
Additional recruitment: FoxStar Legend: # = ignore the rest of the line (i.e. a comment) <brackets>: = control-codes. <n> = a forced linebreak.
Tutorial on how to translate using new method: Step 1) Look at the text, like below. You will see a 'first set' with # in front, meaning the game will ignore this text. You will see a 'second set' with the exact same text, but no #, meaning the game WILL insert this text. <faceadd=0020>#Kate: #<0x5A=1E01><0x54>ジーク……<wait><n> #やっぱりあなただったのね……<wait><clear> <0x5A=1E01><0x54>ジーク……<wait><n> やっぱりあなただったのね……<wait><clear> Step 2) Translate all lines that do NOT have a # in front. If there is a # at the beginning of the line, ignore that line and don't translate it, it's just there for reference. <faceadd=0020>#Kate: #<0x5A=1E01><0x54>ジーク……<wait><n> #やっぱりあなただったのね……<wait><clear> <0x5A=1E01><0x54>Zeek...<wait><n>
It's really you...<wait><clear> Step 3) Inserting translator notes: Type any notes you would like as ##hi this is my note. followed by a short signature to indicate who made the note, i.e. -fs74
It's really you...<wait><clear> ##is it Zeek or Sieg? - fs74
I've tried to make things as convenient as possible for translators, but also as convenient as possible for hackers. If things go according to this format, then these scripts can be inserted as-is into the game. All that would need to be done would be editing to make sure the lines don't spill off to the right side of the screen. Editing guidelines (adapted from the Love Plus translation editing methods) IMPORTANT -Japanese style punctuation should not be used, no double byte letters for periods, commas, contractions, other punctuation, etc. Use single byte ascii for anything translated to English -Be careful to always close script commands with >, sometimes I saw stuff like <clear which would cause the script inserter to complain or crash -Don't put comments after the final <0x00> at the end of the file, it causes the script inserter to crash. Put general comments at the TOP of the file instead
You can edit the text directly in the document.
For each editor, you can pick your highlight color, or text color. When you edit anything, just highlight or change text color to the one you picked. You can type your name at the beginning of the file and specify the highlight or text color.
Use ## in front of the lines you want to add comments.
You can add extra blank lines or add comments wherever you want.
KEEP TRANSLATIONS FAMILY FRIENDLY (dastard instead of b*stard, shoot instead of sh*t, darn instead of d*mn, etc.)
